Reciprocity

SFERS, CalPERS and certain other California public retirement systems provide “reciprocal” retirement benefits. Under reciprocity, a member’s service credit earned under each reciprocal retirement system may be considered to meet eligibility requirements in each plan (if qualified).

Generally, the eligibility criteria seen below, qualifies for reciprocity under SFERS:

 Eligibility Criteria
 green bullet Became a member of SFERS on or after June 29, 1988 and terminated employment with CalPERS or a reciprocal retirement system, and within six (6) months after termination date became a member of SFERS, or;
 green bullet Terminated employment with the City and County of San Francisco on or after June 29, 1988 and became a member of a reciprocal system within six (6) months after termination date with City and County of San Francisco.  If you elect reciprocity, you must be separated completely from City employment before becoming a member in a new reciprocal plan.
green bullet At retirement, a member must apply to retire from each system separately using the same retirement date.

When you retire simultaneously from all systems, your highest compensation earned with any of the reciprocal systems will be used to calculate benefits in each system (given the system uses a retirement formula based on compensation).

For a list of reciprocal retirement systems contact CalPERS at 1-888-225-7377, or visit the CalPERS website.
