Welcome to SFERS!  Retirement is a major milestone and it is never too early to start planning for that day.

As a member in a SFERS miscellaneous plan, you have privileges to two benefit programs administered by the San Francisco Employees’ Retirement System (SFERS):

  • Pension Plan (defined benefit plan): provides service retirement benefits calculated using a formula based on age at retirement, years of service and final compensation.
  • 457(b) Deferred Compensation Plan (defined contribution plan): allows participants to acquire additional tax deferred retirement savings through voluntary contributions designed to supplement your pension benefits

You are automatically enrolled as a member in the SFERS Miscellaneous Plan if you meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Hired from a Civil Service list as a permanent employee in a covered job classification
  • Appointed to a full-time permanent exempt position in a covered job classification
  • Work in a temporary/provisional position in a covered job classification for 1,040 hours in any 12-month period*

* Employees working in a temporary/provisional position are eligible for SFERS membership after having earned 1,040 hours in any 12-month period. Prior to reaching 1,040 hours, you will receive a letter from SFERS informing you of the date you are eligible for retirement membership, along with instructions for completing the new member enrollment process.

  • Attend New Member Enrollment Orientation any Tuesday at 8:30 am or Thursday at 3:00 pm
  • Enroll in the San Francisco Deferred Compensation 457 (b) Plan (SFDCP)

  • Designate a Beneficiary
  • Elect Reciprocity
    (if applicable)
  • Register for mySFERS (30 days after enrollment)
Hired as a Temporary/Provisional Employee (membership after 1,040 hours)
  • Attend New Member Enrollment Orientation (date and time indicated in your Membership Confirmation Letter)
  • Enroll in the San Francisco Deferred Compensation 457 (b) Plan (SFDCP)
  • Membership Confirmation Letter

  • Register for mySFERS (30 days after enrollment)
