It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our Interim Board President, Leona Bridges. Appointed to the Retirement Board in 2013, Commissioner Bridges served with exceptional distinction as both President and Vice President. Her steadfast dedication to the City’s workforce—active and retired—was evident in every aspect of her service. Her loss leaves a profound impact on SFERS and all who had the privilege of working alongside her.
Commissioner Bridges brought more than two decades of experience in the financial services industry, serving as Managing Director for Barclays Global. Her leadership extended well beyond SFERS. Among her many contributions to the community, she was a Director for the Municipal Transportation Agency, Commissioner for the San Francisco Parking Authority, a member of the California State University (CSU) Investment Advisory Committee, San Francisco State University Foundation Board, and the West Bay Local Development Corporation.
She was also deeply committed to expanding educational access. The endowed scholarship she established in the College of Business at San Francisco State University, supporting economically and educationally disadvantaged students, stands as a lasting testament to her generosity, compassion, and belief in creating opportunities for others. Her devotion as a long‑standing member of Third Baptist Church further reflected her guiding values of service and community.
President Bridges’ leadership, integrity, and kindness set her apart as an extraordinary representative of SFERS. She will be remembered not only for her professional accomplishments, but also for the warmth, grace, and friendship she shared with colleagues, staff, and community members.
