Membership
You automatically become a member of SFERS under the Miscellaneous Safety Plan if you meet one of these requirements:
Are hired from a Civil Service list as a permanent employee in a job classification covered by the provisions for pension under the SFERS Miscellaneous Safety Plan
Are appointed to a full-time permanent exempt position in a job classification covered by the provisions for pension under the SFERS Miscellaneous Safety Plan
Work in a temporary/provisional position for 1,040 hours in any 12-month period* in a job classification covered by the provisions for pension under the SFERS Miscellaneous Safety Plan
*Employees working in a temporary/provisional position are eligible for SFERS membership after having earned 1,040 hours in any 12-month period. Prior to reaching 1,040 hours, you will receive a letter from SFERS informing you of the date you are eligible for retirement membership, along with instructions for completing the new member enrollment process.

Hired as a Temporary/Provisional Employee (membership after 1,040 hours) | 1. Complete your New Member Enrollment Packet according to the instructions provided in your Membership Confirmation Letter 2. Designate a Beneficiary | 1. Membership Confirmation Letter 2. Picture ID | 1. Elect Reciprocity (if applicable) 2. Log in to mySFERS (30 days after enrollment) 3. Attend SFERS New Member Webinar 4. Enroll in the San Francisco Deferred Compensation 457(b) Plan (SFDCP) |

Qualifying Age and Years of Credited Service | 50 years old and 5 years of service |
Average Final Pensionable Compensation | Highest average monthly pay in any three consecutive fiscal years or, average monthly pay in the 36 consecutive months immediately prior to retirement |
Service Benefit Calculation | Credited Service x Age Factor x Average Monthly Pensionable Compensation = Monthly Benefit *Maximum annual benefit is 90% of the average final pensionable compensation |
