Membership

Miscellaneous members are employees of the City and County of San Francisco working as non-safety employees who qualify for benefits under the provisions for pension of the SFERS Miscellaneous plan.

You are a member of SFERS under the Miscellaneous Plan if you meet at least one of the following criteria:

Are hired from a Civil Service list as a permanent employee in a job classification covered by the provisions for pension under the SFERS Miscellaneous Plan

Are appointed to a full-time permanent exempt position in a job classification covered by the provisions for pension under the SFERS Miscellaneous Plan

Work in a temporary or provisional position for 1,040 hours in any 12-month period* in a job classification covered by the provisions for pension under the SFERS Miscellaneous Plan

Employees working in a temporary/provisional position are eligible for SFERS membership after having earned 1,040 hours in any 12-month period without separation of employment. Prior to reaching 1,040 hours, you will receive a letter from SFERS informing you of the date you are eligible for retirement membership, along with instructions for completing the new member enrollment process.
