Membership
You are a member of the SFERS Sheriff Plan if on or after January 7, 2012, you meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Sheriff assuming office
- Hired from a Civil Service list as a permanent employee in a covered classification
- Appointed to a full-time permanent exempt position in a covered classification
- Worked in a temporary position in a covered job classification for 1,040 hours in any 12-month period
Employees working in a temporary/provisional position are eligible for SFERS membership after having earned 1,040 hours in any 12-month period. Prior to reaching 1,040 hours, you will receive a letter from SFERS informing you of the date you are eligible for retirement membership, along with instructions for completing the new member enrollment process.

Service Retirement
Membership for the Sheriff Plan A8.608 is based on being hired on or after 1.7.2012.
Qualifying Age and Years of Credited Service | Age 50 and 5 years |
Average Final pensionable compensation | Highest average monthly pay in any three consecutive fiscal years or, average monthly pay in the 36 consecutive months immediately prior to retirement |
Service Benefit Calculation | Credited Service x Age Factor x Average Monthly Pensionable Compensation = Monthly Benefit *Maximum annual benefit is 90% of the average final pensionable compensation |
